I know, I know... the circle of life and forward always forward... blah blah blah. And I'm ALL for progress, like smart phones, cardboardless toilet paper rolls, and nonstick cooking spray (not necessarily in that order.)
But every once in a while, I want to turn back the clock and enjoy things the way they used to be... especially this time of year.
Here are some examples of what I'm talking about...
1.) While I am totally 100% THRILLED to never ever ever EVER have to deal with hunting down the one bad lightbulb in a string of twinkling Christmas lights, I'm really not diggin' the new LED-super-bright-burn-your-corneas-out-mega-beefcake lights either.
Pretty, YES... especially for outside, but I'm sorta partial to the old style for on my tree.
2.) Likewise, I can pop fourteen ready bake cookies in my mouth and wash 'em down with a glass of Merlot in a not-so-skinny minute...
But I'll trade them for my Nanny's Sand Tart sugar cookies every time... I just reeeeeeeally don't want to have to make them! I'm thinkin' this year will be the first time Mom and I haven't tackled rolling out and cutting the dough, cussing at it when it gets too sticky, and trying not to burn the batches (or ourselves.)
3.) And let's talk about Rudolph, my favorite little rednosed reindeer...
He pretty much rocks my socks off to this moment. And Christmas just isn't the same without those sweet voices singing "We're just a couple of misfits." I used to get so freakin' excited about watching this show when I was a kid... and GOD FORBID if I missed the one and only episode for that season. {THE HORROR!}
But nowadays you can just scroll over to the holiday section in your On Demand menu, and voila... Rudolph. Instant gradification! Sure, it seems like an excellent idea, but my kid will never know the anticipation and total excitement about squishing down into a mustard-fart yellow bean bag with a bowl of popcorn to watch it on regular ol' t.v.
4.) Lastly, this one is SUCH a super cool thing... Ever hear of Wanelo?
It's a shopping resource that Lizzy's in love with. And yes, there's an app for it...
This year's Christmas list was presented to me via Wanelo. Yep... she found everything she wanted, made a list, and texted me the link. I logged in, cruised through her list, clicked the stuff I wanted to order and paid up. It took about thirty minutes. No headache, no trip to the mall (gag) and it's all coming straight to the house. YES!
This is certainly the best thing ever as far as I'm concerned... but a little bitty part of me misses those scribble scratched letters to Santa, and crayon circles on Toy's R Us ads. Sigh... signs of the times I guess.
I can only wonder how things have will changed by the time I'm a granny... Rudolph comes to visit in your living room? Cookies that bake in your microwave? Holographic lights? Who knows! :)
Merry Christmas!
